Sam originally studied software engineering, before completing an honours project in security. This led to continuing into a PhD with the Cybersecurity Researchers of Waikato (CROW). He is currently a Technical Advisor for the Harmful Digital Communications Act. He has also been involved with the challenge development and organisation of the New Zealand Cyber Security Challange for the last 3 years.
